Former West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins has stated that he did not resign from his coaching position following a drunk driving arrest and expressed his desire to be reinstated, according to a letter from his attorney to the university.

Bob Huggins’ Cleveland-based attorney, David A. Campbell, claimed in a letter that Huggins “never signed a letter of resignation and never communicated a resignation to anyone at WVU.” According to the Associated Press, the letter also threatened to sue the university if Huggins was not reinstated.

Who is Bob Huggins?

Bob Huggins is a retired American college basketball coach who had an illustrious coaching career at various institutions including Walsh, Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and West Virginia. In recognition of his achievements, he was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Huggins holds the distinction of being the sixth men’s college basketball coach to achieve 900 or more wins in his career. Over the course of his tenure as coach, he guided his teams to an impressive 24 NCAA tournament appearances, 23 of them in the past 26 seasons.

In his playing career, Huggins played basketball at Indian Valley South High School under the guidance of his father Charles after moving from Morgantown, West Virginia, to Port Washington, Ohio.

Huggins was instrumental in helping his squad to a remarkable 26-0 undefeated season his senior year. He has the distinction of being selected as an all-state selection three years in a row thanks to his great play on the court. Huggins won the Ohio Player of the Year title in 1972.

He was charged with drunk driving on June 16 in Pittsburgh. According to police reports, his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. In light of the incident, the university announced his resignation the following night.
