Colin Salmon is an English film and television actor. He is known for playing Charles Robinson in three James Bond films and James “One” Shade in the Resident Evil film series.
After attending Ashcroft High School, Salmon took on the role of drummer in the punk rock band The Friction, a group he co-founded with three high school friends. The band had an active period from 1979 to 1980, during which they released a 7-inch EP, a live cassette, and a cassette EP, performing frequently in and around Luton.
Following this, Salmon briefly collaborated with another band, Tee Vees, and then took on the roles of singer and trumpeter in the Luton-based band Catch of the mid-1980s. In addition to his skills as a drummer, Salmon is a trumpeter and leads his own jazz quartet, showcasing his talents at various venues including the Dorchester Grill Room, and taking part in events such as the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
Salmon gained recognition for his portrayal of Charles Robinson in James Bond films such as Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day.
His acting career began in 1992 with his film debut as Sgt. Robert Oswald in the British miniseries Prime Suspect 2. Salmon has shown his diverse talents in several productions, including playing Note Makoti in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, David Tyrel in the Sky One UK series Hex, and Dr. Rowan. Dunlop in the eighth series of ITV’s Bad Girls.
His contributions extend to science fiction television, where he played Dr. Moon in two episodes of the fourth series of Doctor Who. Salmon’s film credits include Resident Evil, where he played James “One” Shade, and reprised the role in Resident Evil: Retribution. He appeared in the 2002 miniseries Dinotopia as Oonu, leader of the Skybax squad. Salmon also recorded the role of Kerr Avon in the Blake’s 7 audio series.
His television appearances include the season finale of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, the British version of Law & Order, and a role in Death in Paradise.
Salmon showcased his dancing skills on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing in its tenth series. In 2015, he played a fictional version of himself in the Netflix series Master of None. Salmon also played Chudleigh Pomeroy in the 2018 film Mortal Engines. Salmon joined the cast of EastEnders in 2023, taking on the role of George Knight, a newly introduced co-owner of the Queen Vic in the BBC soap.
