Alex Padilla Appointment as California Senator
On December 22, 2020, Padilla was selected by Governor Gavin Newsom to replace Vice President-elect Harris in the United States Senate. Padilla will be the first Latino Senator from California and the first male senator to represent the state since 1992
Following his selection, Padilla has said: “I do think for the Latino community, it is a historic moment.” The senator’s education includes a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, after which he worked for Hughes Aircraft in Southern California.
