In Lisa Guerrero’s recently published book, Warrior: My Path to Being Brave, she revealed that she suffered a miscarriage during a game in 2003 when she was a reporter for ABC’s Monday Night Football.

The 58-year-old American journalist married former baseball player Scott Gavin Erickson the following year.

Lisa Guerrero and Erickson together founded HomeTeam Productions, and the couple also executive produced the film A Plumm Summer, which was released in 2007.

In her book, Lisa Guerrero revealed that one particular season on ABC’s MNF was absolute hell for her. She shared that things went terribly wrong at the concert and she miscarried on the sidelines during a game.

During the 2003 NFL season, she took over the role of reporter for Melissa Stark’s MNF.

Lisa said that from the day she started working for ABC, men in the sports world treated her with unfair criticism and ridicule. In particular, she singled out Freddie Gaudelli, the executive producer of MNF and her boss.

Lisa claimed in her memoir that Freddie often criticized her work. Not only that, but she also received regular misogynistic trolls from viewers, which stressed her out. All of this bullying, trolling, and criticism got her to the point where she contemplated suicide.

Lisa Guerrero was pregnant with her fiancé Scott Erickson’s child at the time. She said that she was under immense pressure during that period of her life.

Lisa went on to describe the day that she had her miscarriage. She was reporting from the sidelines when she suddenly experienced a sharp pain in her abdomen. A few moments later, she felt blood dripping and she wanted to go into the bathroom.

At first, she thought she had her period, but then she remembered that she was pregnant and was probably having a miscarriage. Despite feeling dizzy and nauseated, she Lisa covered the game reports and then went to the bathroom. She narrated:

“During our Wednesday phone calls, Freddie scolded me for bad posture. The pain was unbearable. I heard myself mispronounce a player’s name and knew he would find out later.”

Lisa remembered how she had to put a bunch of toilet paper in her underwear to stop the blood from dripping.

She did not tell anyone about the incident. After finishing work that day, she headed to the airport. Lisa said in her book that she doesn’t blame anyone for her miscarriage. She continued:

“The miscarriage was not because of Freddie, and it was not because of a radio host or a bad column. It was the culmination of the whole season of negativity and cruelty. It was really cruel.”

However, Gaudelli challenged Lisa’s assessment of her behavior towards her. He claimed to have always tried to be the biggest defender of the sports commentator.

Gaudelli shared that he was learning about Lisa’s pregnancy for the first time after all these years. He said that he was sorry that the journalist had to fight and go through this difficult stage of her life without the support of her team.
