Who is Troy Smith?

Troy Smith, from Port Lincoln in South Australia, was allegedly caught with 3.19 grams of methamphetamine in a Colgate toothpaste container at the Champlung Mas Hotel in Legian, Bali, on April 30. An Australian father is alleged to have used meth for the first time in a Bali court as he faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.

It was claimed that the police found another 0.4 grams of drugs purchased in Bali, along with a hookah and a lighter. Mr. Smith, 49, was initially charged with drug trafficking, which carries a possible life sentence, but those charges were changed to drug possession and use earlier this month.

He was initially languishing in a shared prison cell with a dozen other inmates, but last month he was released to a rehabilitation center after the Bali National Narcotics Agency concluded he was not part of a criminal group and was ‘using drugs for himself’. Mr Smith had an ashen expression as he was led out of the back of a police van in handcuffs on Thursday.

Troy Smith Arrested in drug case

Wearing a white shirt, tan chinos and a prison red vest, the father of two did not answer questions from waiting reporters and hid his face in a corner of the holding cell.

He was then led through the media throng to court, where he sat on a wooden bench and nervously fiddled with his wedding ring as he awaited his fate.

Mr Smith was charged with two alternative articles of the Indonesian Drug Law, one relating to drug possession and the other relating to drug use. The former carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison, while the latter carries a maximum sentence of four years and the possibility of being sent to a rehabilitation center if proven to be addicted.

The prosecutor said Mr. Smith possessed, concealed, controlled or provided narcotics, including 3.15 grams of crystal methamphetamine, without permission from authorities.

“The methamphetamine was sent by a friend from Australia, while the other meth was bought from someone selling it on the street around Jalan Melasti Legian Kuta in Badung,” the prosecutor told the court. Mr. Smith did not object after the indictment was read to the court.

His trial is expected to continue next week and he has been sent to a rehabilitation centre. Mr Smith’s case was handled by ‘fixer’ John McLeod, who worked to help save Schapelle Corby from prison. Mr McLeod announced on Thursday that Mr Smith was ‘committed to scrupulously following all legal protocols’.

“Our legal team is thoroughly prepared and we have confidence in the integrity of the Indonesian judicial system,” Mr. McLeod added. ‘Troy is making significant progress in his recovery at the rehabilitation clinic. His determination to overcome his addictions is evident and he benefits from daily professional support.

‘Troy is dedicated to overcoming challenges with his newfound enthusiasm for life.’ Mr Smith’s lawyer, Sienny Karmana, previously told The Advertiser that his charges were dropped after the Bali National Narcotics Agency concluded he was using drugs.

“The drug assessment team found him to be a drug user,” Ms Karmana said.

‘She was a drug addict for years.’ The narcotics agency, which determines whether people arrested on drug charges in Indonesia are users, addicts or dealers, also concluded that Mr. Smith was not part of any narcotics organization.

Ms Karmana said her client needed rehabilitation rather than prison.

‘We, as lawyers, hope that the judge will sentence him to rehabilitation because he has an addiction problem.

‘What he needs now is rehabilitation, not prison.’

Mr Smith was on holiday with his wife Tracey when he was arrested by police.

The couple, who met on Tinder, got married in their hometown, Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, in December.

Mr. Smith struggled with alcoholism in his life, which caused his children to stop communicating with him and his marriage to break down.

Before his arrest, he had married his wife and was enjoying a world-traveling life as a newlywed. ‘I’ve had an interesting time in the last twelve years,’ Mr Smith said in a video.

‘The chronic alcoholic has definitely hit rock bottom. You can’t drink more than me.

‘I couldn’t see a way out and to be honest I probably should have died. The kids don’t talk to me anymore.

‘But in the strangest of circumstances I met this girl at a Tinder meeting in Nairobi and have been to Bali ever since.

‘I love life now. This girl gives me the motivation to do anything. ‘He’s my life now.’
